Player To Watch - Fabio Coentrao

In watching Benfica beat Lyon 4-3 earlier this month, one player (aside from Carlos Martins, chalking up 4 assists) that caught my eye was Benfica's left-back, Fabio Coentrao.

Recently converted from a left winger, this 22-year old Portuguese international, was chased by some big clubs early in his career, but has since, to my knowledge, been left out of the rumor mill.

With such great skill anywhere on the left side of the field, one would think that clubs around Europe would be clamoring for a player of his youth and prolificness. He scored two goals in this Lyon game from the left back position and has scored 1 in the Portuguese Liga.

Given his unlucky loan spell to Real Zaragoza, where he made but one appearance, it might generally be hard for clubs to see the potential of this speedy player. I however would love to see him at Liverpool, where Konchesky is at the end of his career, Insua is sold to Fiorentina, and Fabio Aurelio has yet to make an appearance. Many teams will undoubtably be seeking his flexible talents next summer or even in January.
